As Design Research Fellow in UCHD, Simon develops and applies methods for designing with people rather than designing for them, involving the users and providers of health services.
Simon has a research background in design and since 2003 has been developing participatory methods for producing designs that are both innovative and human-centred. In 2009 he was awarded a PhD for the methodology he developed to support these methods, which has been applied in diverse projects with colleagues from Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield and the University of Leeds. Simon has subsequently been invited to lead seminars on this work in Norway, Denmark and Belgium.
Health services were a new field for Simon but, as an area where the many different people affected must be considered and where innovation is needed to deal with increasing change, one where his work on participatory innovation has particular relevance.
