Matt initially took a professional interest in Engineering, but his focus moved to Product Design and he undertook a BA in this area in 2003. During his undergraduate studies Matt developed an interest in the design of medical devices and products and won the Inclusive Artefact prize from Sheffield Hallam University. An MA in Industrial Design followed which allowed further development in this field of interest leading to the creation of a series of new garments for the SMART stroke rehabilitation project which are currently poised for further development. During his MA Matt also won the ISPA design prize working with fellow designer Guido Garotti.
Now embarking on a PhD, supported by UCHD, Matt will be looking at how medical products can be better integrated and developed from within the NHS. This fits with the general aim of UCHD, to showcase design as a positive force for change within the NHS.
Between his BA and MA study Matt gained commercial design experience working on consumer products for industry with Design Futures, Sheffield Hallam University’s commercial design consultancy.
