Andy presents at PINC 2011 15/03/2011

Andy was in Sønderborg, Denmark from 13-15th January to present at the Participatory Innovation Conference (PINC) 2011.

Participatory innovation brings together theories and methods from various academic fields that describe how people outside an organisation can contribute to its innovation. The conference aimed to identify ways for industry and the public sector to develop innovation by involving interested parties such as employees, suppliers and customers in the process.

The conference was organised into five parallel tracks:

  1. Making design and analysing interaction
  2. Staging design and anthropology
  3. Organising participatory innovation
  4. Designing innovative business models
  5. Public procurement of participatory innovation

Andy presented Different Views: Including Others in Participatory Health Service Innovation  as part of Track 3, ‘Organising Participatory Innovation’ .

Delegates stayed in their chosen track throughout the proceedings which Andy felt was a really effective way to work as it led to productive, in-depth discussion rather than less involved participation across a number of different strands.

One particularly important point of discussion focussed on the relationship between design and innovation.  Andy discussed the idea that innovation which involves introducing change into a system is very dependent on the people inside that system taking ownership of the idea and putting it into practice. Design work can produce good ideas and present them in convincing and compelling ways, but innovation requires uptake.

Also in Track 3 was a project from Finland,  Hammaspiekko – Tooth Troll I Research Video  (Pässilä, Oikarinen & Konsti-Laakso – see conference proceedings for full paper) about using research based theatre (forum theatre) to look at how dentists  interact with their teenage patients and particularly the mistakes that can be made while interacting with the teenagers during an appointment. There were similarities between this work and how UCHD used the Dead Earnest theatre group as part of the BOSOP  project .
