The 8th conference of the International Committee for Design History and Design Studies 16/10/2012

The 8th conference of the International Committee for Design History and Design Studies (ICDHS) was recently held in São Paulo, Brazil.
Matt attended the conference to present a co-authored paper called
Making Space: The future places, tools and technologies for open design. Matt’s co-author was
Chris Jackson, of Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand.
The paper discussed the historical preconditions for open design as laid down by the economist E.F. Schumacher and Ivan Illich. They talked about the need for tools that were cheap enough for everyone to afford, suitable for small scale application and compatible with our need for creativity- conditions that open design seeks to fulfil. They also discussed how these requirements could be achieved and how the future development of tools and spaces for open design should progress. You can read the paper
