Endabled By Design Design-athon 22/01/2013

At the beginning of November 2012 Matt was invited to attend the Endabled By Design Design-athon. This two day event brought together designers, makers, technologists, hackers and people who use assistive technology to compete for the 3D printed trophy and a chance to develop their idea with IDEO. Enabled by Design (EbD) is a social business and community of people who share a strong interest in Design for All. They believe that good design can find solutions for everyday, real world problems and support people to live as independently as possible.

The event was sponsored by IDEO, the Technology Strategy Board, FutureGov, Sugru and hosted by Ravensbourne, London. Day one started with inspiring talks by each of the sponsors. In the afternoon participants were split into teams each including a designer, maker, manufacturer, Ravensbourne design student and a member of the Enabled by Design community. There were facilities for making physical artefacts, prototypes and mockups. The goal of each team was to design and build prototypes that demonstrated how products can be designed and built with people for people, in just 24 hours. Further details of the various design stages: explore, ideas and making and share, can be found on the EbD blog and their flickr stream.

The Design-athon concluded with  the teams pitching their new products to a panel of judges. Two prizes were awarded with the  Judges’ Choice Award going to Paul’s kettle   and the Peoples’ Choice going to Safe House. The organisers were so impressed by all the projects they decided to share them via their blog. The ideas are split into Empathy projects and  Whose Life   projects.
